Midsteeple Quarter has been highlighted in a Scottish Government report released on Tuesday 3rd February, which looks at the importance of town centres in Scotland and key ways in which they can be made stronger.

In the review, Midsteeple Quarter project in Dumfries has been hailed as a good example of a community focused development which has made a difference in the local town centre.

‘A New Future for Scotland’s Town Centres: Town Centre Action Plan Review Group Report’ is an independent review, led by Leigh Sparks, a leading retail expert at the University of Stirling. The expert group was tasked with looking at how Scotland’s towns can be made stronger, while examining how they might also be made greener, healthier, more equitable and inclusive places.

We are really encouraged that Midsteeple Quarter has been mentioned in this report – it is a crucial time to be looking at High Streets and town centres across Scotland with the impact of Covid-19 and the closure of several major retailers. This independent research shows that Midsteeple Quarter is being seen nationally as an exemplary project that other towns can follow as an example.

The foreword, provided by Aileen Campbell MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Local Government, stated: “Unfortunately, COVID-19 has brought new and serious economic challenge to our towns and places and has required us to look again at how we support them. That is why we commissioned this review of the Action Plan to ensure we have the right measures in place to enable our towns to emerge from COVID with resilience.”
