Friday April 27

The Bakers Oven in Queensbury Square has been lit up since January as part of the D-Lux Festival of Light. The building has been turned into a video jukebox, which shows specially made 30-second films which have been made by the community of Dumfries who want to imagine a new future for the High Street.

On the evening of Thursday 26th April, the D-Lux and Midsteeple Quarter Team hosted a Wrap Party and Awards Ceremony at the Stove Network. Members of the public were invited along to find out the winning films and come together to celebrate the end of this project which signalled a time of change on Dumfries High Street.

Best Performance was awarded to the Wee Wildings of Lincluden; Best Animation was awarded to Maria Ruiz Plana for her shadow puppet films “Wings”; Best Film Which Met the Brief was awarded to local filmmaker Sian Yeshe for her re-edits of black and white movies; Best Comedy was awarded to the Wildings o’ Galloway for “A Wilding Night” and Most Innovative was awarded to artist Martin O’ Neill for text animations blended with old filmstock leaders. After the winners were announced, everyone moved onwards to the Bakers Oven to watch the winning films together in the Square.

The D-Lux Team were delighted that so many people came along to watch the films together for the last time, and are pleased with the imagination that has been shown in the films produced by the people of Dumfries and beyond. The Hoose has been a very popular addition to the town by bringing something new and dynamic to the High Street in the evenings, and we hope that this will just be the beginning of an exciting new town centre for Dumfries.
