Creatively celebrating Community Land Week in Midsteeple Quarter

"What a great way to spend an afternoon!". That was one of the comments made by participants after enjoying a few hours making some art and celebrating community land ownership.

As part of Community Land Week, Midsteeple Quarter 's artists Kate Drummond and Hannah Fox  hosted a free geli printing workshop.

The prints created will become part of a new public artwork celebrating the redevelopment of 135-135 High Street and the progress that community ownership is fuelling in Dumfries town centre.

Kate and Hannah said afterwards: "We had a great day creating Geli prints with everyone who came along to our Community Land Week workshop.

“We made lots of wonderful bright printed images that we are going to use to create a collective 'paper patchwork' that will be part of our artwork celebrating the launch of the first renovated MSQ building."

The power of community ownership - of which Midsteeple Quarter is a trailblazer in working to achieve High Street regeneration led by local people - was celebrated throughout Community Land Week 2023, which saw a record-breaking more than 40 organisers put on events across the country, including ours in Dumfries.

Heather Yearwood, a Development Officer with Community Land Scotland, said: “Community Land Week celebrates community ownership – and the Community Land Scotland team had a great time going out and about visiting communities throughout Scotland.

“The Geli printing session with MSQ was a lot of fun! We got to be part of creating a large celebratory piece of art that will go on display next year. We can’t wait to see it!’”

Thanks to everyone who came along and had such a good time. As our photographs above show, there was fun for all ages.
